Cline is an open-source coding agent for the desktop, code editors, the terminal and other products. It explores a codebase, proposes a plan, then makes coordinated multi-file edits and runs commands, reacting to test, server and deploy output as it appears.

Key features:

  • Plan and Act modes, with per-step approval or auto-approve.
  • Multi-file edits with diffs, checkpoints and one-click undo.
  • Any model: Claude, GPT, Gemini, local Ollama or LM Studio, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
  • Repository rules and skills through .clinerules files.
  • MCP servers, plugins and an SDK for custom tools.
  • Chat from Slack, Discord, Telegram or Linear, and headless runs in GitHub Actions or GitLab.
  • Scheduled multi-agent teams with coordinator and specialist agents.

Cline runs as a desktop app, as an extension for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf and JetBrains, and as a CLI and SDK via npm. It is free for individual developers, who pay only for model inference with their own keys or the Cline provider. Enterprise adds the JetBrains extension, SSO, role-based access, audit logs and an SLA.
