Aider is an open-source AI pair programming tool for the terminal. Developers chat with it to start a project or change an existing codebase, and it edits the files directly and commits each change to git with a descriptive message.

Key features:

  • A map of the whole codebase for working in larger projects.
  • Support for 100+ programming languages.
  • Automatic git commits that can be diffed or undone with normal git tools.
  • Linting and testing after each change, with fixes for the problems found.
  • Requests from inside any IDE through code comments.
  • Images, web pages and voice as input.
  • A copy-paste mode for LLM web chats.

Aider is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license and installs with pip. It works with Claude, DeepSeek, OpenAI and almost any other model, including local ones, using the developer's own API keys.
