GitHub MCP Server
GitHub's official MCP server that lets agents work with repositories, issues, pull requests and Actions
The GitHub MCP Server is GitHub's official Model Context Protocol server. It lets AI agents and coding assistants read and act on GitHub repositories, issues, pull requests, Actions workflows and other GitHub data through natural language instead of custom API integrations.
Key features:
- Browse code, search repositories and read files.
- Create and update issues and pull requests, and review changes.
- Monitor GitHub Actions runs and investigate build failures.
- Enable or limit groups of tools through toolsets, with an Insiders mode for experimental tools.
- Connect to the remote server hosted by GitHub with OAuth or a personal access token, or run it locally.
- Use GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency.
Install guides cover VS Code, Copilot CLI, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. The server is written in Go, open source under the MIT license and free to use with a GitHub account.
